Graham Greene is widely known English novelist and short-story writer. his masterpieces were read in the whole world in the previous century. He is respected as a superb storyteller. In my short article I would like to make an overview of his novel “Doctor Fisher of Geneva or The Bomb Party”

Doctor Fisher is an extremely fond-of-humiliating-people person. He is devil who imagined himself being God. Though he says that God likes to tempt us, it’s not correct. God loves people and he doesn’t send us difficulties. This is the devil who tempts people. If to consider Bible texts, there is a scene when Satan tries to tempt Jesus Christ. So why should Dr Fisher think he’s A God?

I still cannot understand why sometimes people, after being wounded, become mad with the entire world, why do they revenge for other people? To my mind Dr Fisher is a weak person. He is pouring his anger unto people around him, though they have no relevance to everything in his life. As I think, no one is allowed to do  this to people. Even if these creatures don’t deserve to be respected. In the novel itself as these creatures we have Toads – the representatives of so-called ‘higher society’. They endure any form of Fisher’s humiliation in order to get his present. Though they have enough money to buy this, they still play these cruel games. They try to mask their greediness, in order to be accepted in this world, but as long as they consider Fisher one of them, they don’t hide it in this company. To my mind word Toads doesn’t fit to show these people. As long as they cooperate when they need something and don’t accept newcomers, they are more likely to be hyenas. These sly and tricky animals do everything just for themselves and I don’t think that a Frog would care even to come to someone’s party to do something for itself. They are too lazy.

Only two people were immune to Dr Fisher’s games. These were Steiner and Jones. Why? Maybe because they were not so reach to be jealous and to want more or they were not so spoiled. There was love in their lives and this is the clearest feelings of all. It saves the world. Though it cannot live long in this society, the surrounding doesn’t accept something clean. Maybe one day Dr Fisher had this feeling, but I guess this was some kind of a very special love.

Both men (Steiner and Jones) are the same as Toads but in different meaning. You see, Jones was greedy for death because after Anna-Louisa’s death he wanted to join her. Soon he realizes that the time will come but till then he tries to reach death. Steiner was envy for Dr Fisher having his (Steiner’s) love.

Alfred Jones reminds me of Dr Fisher but not being so cruel. Maybe they could be even close friends in other circumstances. I have a feeling that Jones is the inside mirror of Dr Fisher. Inside he is kind and nice but everything is hidden under this mask of careless person.

Suicide is shown in the novel as the way to freedom. For Dr Fisher this was what he needed to do because there was no sense in continuing his games. But actually this is not freedom but showing weakness. Everyone can commit suicide but not everyone can stay alive trying to deal with this crazy world.

This novel is definitely worth reading because you start to realize that not everything what we have we appreciate. Maybe it’s possible to change something in this life for love to change the world.  Maybe people will start to care not only about their well-being but also about their inner worlds. Let’s hope for better.
